Mice are known to be cute animals. Still, even the cuteness is nothing compared to the damage these tiny creatures can cause. Mice are more prone to come to your home if you live in California since they are looking for moisture to cool them from the dry weather. They are moving to homes since they find it as an easy source of food and water.

Mice are known to spoil food and water with their urine and droppings. They can also transmit dangerous infections through food contamination. Not only are mice bad for your home, but they also threaten the structural integrity of your home. Mice are known to chew through almost everything from cardboard to wires and even water pipes. Mice can cause a lot of damage if left alone especially in large numbers.

To keep them from damaging your home, some things can be done. It is important for you to practice proper hygiene to ensure the mice do not have access to your home. Even when your house is infested by mice, you can get rid of them using humane measures. Mice are still animals and those who vouch for animal rights maintain that they still need to be respected. Here are some of the simple things you can do to ensure that your home is mice free.

  • Prevent them from accessing your home by sealing all cracks and holes outside the home. You should pay attention to places where utilities get into the home such as water pipes and electric cables. Mice are known climbers and are willing to scale a wall if there is a chance they will find an opening. They are also known to squeeze into tiny spaces.
  • You should also make sure your yard is clean and trim any bushes near your home to reduce their hiding spaces. Also, store your firewood away from your home and possibly above the ground where you can see under it to prevent mice from nesting there.
  • You should also check vents and doors to ensure there are no spaces between the frames and the vents are completely sealed to prevent any rodents from gaining access to your home. The screens on vents and dryers should not have any tears as these will act as openings.
  • You can also use natural mouse repellents to keep them away. If mice only attack a certain section of the home, you can prepare a solution from salad oil, horseradish, garlic and a lot of cayenne pepper. When you coat surfaces with this solution, mice will not get through since it is a repellent.
  • You can also get a cat. Mice are known to fear cats, and when they sense their presence, they will keep away from home. You can also ensure you go with the cat to places where the mice are rampant including those places that surround your home. If any mice are around, they will stay away, or your cat will get rid of them for you.
  • If the mice are too many, it may be time to get rid of them by reducing the population. When this time comes, you should be ready to consider all options available. You can also use traps like the traditional spring trap that is the most humane way of dealing with a mice outbreak. The trap kills almost instantly, and the mouse does not feel pain at all. Other options include the use of electronic traps, and you can also make your mouse trap. The use of traps is considered better than using poison.
  • There is also the option of using live traps where you trap the mouse and release it far from home. The mouse must be released at a distance to prevent it from going back to your home. However, you must take care and release the mouse away from other people’s homes too.

Mice are cute creatures that are known to cause a lot of destruction. Whichever method you choose to use for their disposal depends on the intensity of the infestation. However, it is recommended that you use humane methods when dealing with these tiny creatures.
